Have you heard of “frosting shots”? Years ago, some clever bakeries began recognizing that some people are ALL about the frosting, so they started selling little shot glass-sized cups of pure frosting for the frosting fanatics. I don’t know who invented the frosting shot, but as a serious frosting fan, I’d like to give them a big hug because it’s a brilliant (and very, very tasty) idea.
Of course, a standard frosting shot is loaded with carbs because of the high sugar content. But fear not! Because I am all about bringing mainstream foods into the keto community, I’ve created these Keto Frosting Shots that are just as to-die-for as the originals. This keto frosting recipe is buttercream-flavored (thanks to a special ingredient), but you can get as creative as you want with the flavoring. (And, as you can see, I had a little fun with food dye in these photos!)
Keto Frosting Shots are ideal for a snack or dessert and will be a HUGE hit at parties with ketoers and non-ketoers alike. The only people who may not like these are people who don’t like frosting, and it’s probably not a good idea to associate with those sorts of people. 😉 (Kidding, of course!)
Let’s get started with this recipe… it’s a breeze to make!
Ingredients Needed for Keto Frosting Shots
Ingredient quantities are located in the recipe card at the end of the post.
Swerve Confectioners Sugar Replacement: If you’re looking for a sugar substitute, you’ll love Swerve Confectioners! It uses (natural) sugar alcohols which have zero effect on blood sugar, meaning you can subtract them from the net carb count. (That gives Swerve zero net carbs.) It also measures just like sugar, so there isn’t any guessing about how much to use. I purchase the 48 oz. bags because they are convenient and a much better price per ounce than the 12 oz. bags.
Capella Buttercream Flavor Drops: These flavor drops add the perfect buttercream flavor to this frosting. One bottle goes a long way!
Other ingredients:
- Cream cheese
- Butter
- Vanilla extract
- Frosting cups (I used 2 oz for the photos, but the 1 oz size is better for smaller portions)
Tips for Making Keto Frosting Shots
For the recipe in detail, scroll to the recipe card at the end of the post.
- Make sure the ingredients are at room temperature.
- Use a hand mixer or stand mixer.
- Don’t mix all ingredients together at once; follow the instructions on the recipe card for best results.
I Need a Sweeter/Thicker Frosting! What Can I Do?
Traditional cream cheese frosting calls for a LOT of powdered sugar. Many recipes with this amount of butter and cream cheese call for two, or even FOUR, cups of powdered sugar. Personally, I think that’s sweetness overload, but if you want that level of sweetness, or if you want something a bit firmer to pipe onto keto sweets, you can increase the Swerve Confectioners to your desired sweetness/thickness. It will add zero net carbs since sugar alcohols are not included in the net carb count.
Should I Use Salted Butter or Unsalted Butter?
It’s completely up to you! I prefer the taste of salted butter in this recipe, but you can do any of the following:
- Use unsalted butter
- Use unsalted butter and add salt to taste
- Use salted butter
I’m pretty sure you will be making this recipe a LOT, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to experiment!
How Big is a Serving of This Keto Frosting?
This recipe makes about 2 cups frosting, which means with 16 servings, each serving is 2 tbsp.

Can I substitute Lankanto powdered sugar equally for Swerve?
Hi Nicole, Yes! That will give the same level of sweetness. Enjoy!
What did you use to color them?
Hi Dee! I used Wilton Icing Colors: https://amzn.to/2yajFVs
Jessica, have you tried the Capella Cotton Candy, it would be good in the frosting bomb,, ,, might have to give it a try, I use the same recipe to make my sugar free Lime coconut fat bombs,,, , thanks for all you do,, an your time in helping so many,,,
Great idea, Joyladene! I haven’t tried that one yet, but just bought Glazed Donut and it is amazing. Someone told me she added it to my Pancake Muffins and it made them taste like yellow cupcakes. I’ll get Cotton Candy next!
Thank YOU for reading and for all your posts in the Facebook group! 🙂
Have you tried freezing this at all? Not that I think frosting will last all that long with me, but I’d hate to lose it too. Looks so so yummy!
Hi Andrea, Yes! You can freeze it for up to three months in an airtight container. It definitely is yummy! 🙂
Hi,
I live in Germany and habe never seen those drops. For what can i replace it?
Hi Anja! You can just use an additional 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (1 1/2 tsp total) instead.
If I dont have any of those flavorings can I use Wilton’s until I get some?
Hi Cheryl, Yes, definitely!
Hi Jessica! I have never used the drops before but I just ordered some online. I would like to confirm that you use 20 drops in the recipe? It seems like a lot to the imagination! I want to make sure I’m not misinterpreting and overflavoring
Hi Savannah! 🙂 It is indeed 20 drops. At that amount, it adds a good flavor without being overwhelming. Enjoy!
These are SINFUL!!!!
I made a double batch abs dropped the confectioner down to 1cup and the butter to 1 stick…it was PERFECT!!!!
I’m so happy to hear that you enjoyed the recipe, Amy! Sinful indeed! 🙂
I used half the amount of Swerve, but it turned out great! Tastes exactly like frosting!
Thanks for the review, Laurel! I’m so happy that you enjoyed it! 🙂
