Don’t be fooled by the name – this Keto Nutella Puppy Chow is a (very delicious) food for people! I have no idea where it got its name, but growing up, we used to make it at home with Chex cereal, peanut butter, chocolate chips, and powdered sugar.

The original recipe is definitely not keto, but I made a keto-friendly original version several years ago. This time, I’m back with a Nutella-flavored version that takes the recipe to the next yummy level. 😍

Why You’ll Love This Keto Nutella Puppy Chow

  • It’s a chocolate keto dessert or snack that almost tastes too good to be keto! (But it is.)
  • If you’re looking for a keto-friendly treat to serve at parties, this recipe is it! Everyone will love it.
  • You can’t go wrong with a recipe with keto Nutella and keto powdered sugar.

Please note that the name “puppy chow” is one of the traditional names for this treat, but it is NOT food for dogs – this is a dessert for people! Do not feed it to any dogs.

How to Make Keto Nutella Puppy Chow {Quick Overview}

This is just a quick overview of some of the steps involved in making the low carb puppy chow. For the recipe in detail, including exact measurements used at each step, scroll to the recipe card at the end of the post.

This recipe has two parts:

  • In part 1, you will create the keto cereal, which is meant to be a stand-in for the Chex cereal that is traditionally used in this recipe.
  • In part 2, you will create the final dessert.

Part 1: Create the Cereal

Combine the dry ingredients with the wet and spread the cereal onto a non-stick cookie sheet, preferably one topped with a silicone baking mat. Bake until batter is cooked through and edges begin to lightly brown, then remove from oven.

Flip the cereal “mat” over, then cut it into thin strips using a pizza cutter or kitchen shears. Next, cut the thin strips into Chex-cereal-sized pieces. Bake again and remove from oven.

Place keto cereal in a bowl and set aside.

Part 2: Create the Final Dessert (Low Carb Puppy Chow)

Ready to create that chocolate-coated amazing dessert in the first photo? 😍 Let’s get started!

Microwave the ChocZero chocolate chips, ChocZero Chocolate Hazelnut spread, butter, and vanilla as instructed on the recipe card.

Then, combine mixture and keto cereal and stir until each piece is evenly coated. Add the coated cereal to a 1-gallon Ziploc bag.

Here comes the magic… Add Swerve Confectioners to the bag, zip the bag closed, and shake until the cereal is sufficiently coated with Swerve.

Open the bag and place the cereal on a non-stick cookie sheet. Dust with additional Swerve Confectioners if desired.

NOTE: Keto Puppy Chow won’t be as white as regular Puppy Chow because Swerve dissolves a bit when wet.

Chill the cereal for at least 15 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Cereal Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375 F.
  • Combine the almond flour, coconut, and stevia in a bowl.
  • Add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix until combined. (The mixture will be thick and sticky.)
  • Spread the mixture non-stick cookie sheet or one covered with a silicone baking mat. Spread it as thinly and evenly as possible, but it doesn’t have to be perfect.
  • Bake for 9-12 minutes, until the cereal is cooked through and the edges begin to lightly brown. Remove the cookie sheet from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes.
  • Flip the cereal “mat” over and then cut it into thin strips using a pizza cutter or kitchen shears. Then, cut the thin strips into Chex-cereal sized pieces.
  • Put the cookie sheet with the cereal back into the oven for 6-8 minutes, watching the cereal to ensure it doesn’t get too brown.
  • Remove cereal from oven and place in a bowl to cool.

Puppy Chow Instructions

  • Add the ChocZero chocolate chips, ChocZero Chocolate Hazelnut spread, and butter to a large, microwave-safe bowl.
  • Microwave the mixture on high in 20-second bursts, stirring in between, until it is fully melted and no lumps remain. (It took me two rounds.) After it’s melted, stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Combine mixture and cereal and stir until each piece of cereal is evenly coated.
  • Add the coated cereal to a 1-gallon Ziploc bag.
  • Add Swerve to bag, zip the bag closed, and shake until the cereal is sufficiently coated with Swerve.
  • Open the bag and place the cereal on a non-stick cookie sheet. Dust with additional Swerve Confectioners if desired. (Note: Keto Puppy Chow won't be as white as regular Puppy Chow because Swerve dissolves a bit when wet.)
  • Chill the cereal for at least 15 minutes before serving.
